Sadly, the fears have been confirmed. Standard & Poor‘s has downgraded the United States’ credit rating for the first time in the history of the ratings.
According to AP, the credit rating agency says that it is cutting the country’s top AAA rating by one notch to AA+. On Friday evening S&P said that the debt bill recently passed by Congress was not enough to stabilize the nation’s debt crisis.
AP also reports that a source familiar with the situation said that the Obama administration believes S&P’s analysis contained “deep and fundamental flaws.”
And it gets worse. The Wall Street Journal published the following press release from S&P that claims the rating agency could be downgrading the U.S. yet again to a AA. In addition, the S&P statement says the downgrade reflects “our view that the effectiveness, stability, and predictability of American policymaking and political institutions have weakened at a time of ongoing fiscal and economic challenges to a degree more than we envisioned when we assigned a negative outlook to the rating on April 18, 201:”
– We have lowered our long-term sovereign credit rating on the United States of America to ‘AA+’ from ‘AAA’ and affirmed the ‘A-1+’ short-term rating.
– We have also removed both the short- and long-term ratings from CreditWatch negative.
– The downgrade reflects our opinion that the fiscal consolidation plan that Congress and the Administration recently agreed to falls short of what, in our view, would be necessary to stabilize the government’s medium-term debt dynamics.
– More broadly, the downgrade reflects our view that the effectiveness, stability, and predictability of American policymaking and political institutions have weakened at a time of ongoing fiscal and economic challenges to a degree more than we envisioned when we assigned a negative outlook to the rating on April 18, 2011.

World Iran Revolutionary Guard Commander Becomes New President of OPEC
If you were worried about foreign oil before and production gouging by OPEC before, just wait until you hear who‘s the organization’s new president.
The Guardian is reporting that Rostam Ghasemi, who on Wednesday became Iran’s oil minister, is now the new head of OPEC. But not only is he from the U.S.-hating Iran, he’s also been sanctioned by the U.S., the E.U. and Australia and has his assets blacklisted.
The Revolutionary Guard and Iran couldn’t be happier.
“The clever and decisive vote of Iranian MPs for engineer Ghasemi to become the oil minister is a meaningful and crucial response to the attacks against the guards from the west’s media empire,” Ramedan Sharif, the head of the revolutionary guards public relations’ unit, said, according to Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency.

Crime Minn. Man Faces Jail For Feeding Birds in Own Backyard
A man in Bloomington, MN has run afoul of local bird feeding statutes, and he could spend up to 90 days in jail for the offense.
Craig Brown has said he wanted to make his yard a haven for birds. And local law allows for the installation of bird feeders as long as they are 5 feet off of the ground.
But neighbors claim that brown has been dropping seeds on the ground in his yard- which apparently constitutes a misdemeanor.
Brown refuses to plead guilty, saying that the seeds fell from his feeders, and he doesn’t want a criminal offense on his record. Still, he’s removed them for the time being.
He faces up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.
